Calling all adults in Truro

Sometimes the news you get about education through the wonderful world of the Internet is almost too overpowering to bear:

Truro: Adult education classes offered

The following adult education classes will be offered in Truro this fall: Quilting, ceramics, Latin dance, Works on Paper, Spanish, yoga, Introduction to the Computer and Introduction to Pilates.

What are "Works on Paper" and "Pilates"?

On the other hand, if this really is what counts as news in Truro, it must be a pretty quiet place, so if what you want is a quiet life …

Dunno about Works on Paper, but Pilates (pill-ah-tees) is an exercise program. I've not tried it. I think of it as yoga with extra ab work. That is probably offensively incorrect if you dig Pilates, but it at least gives you an idea.

Well, from my perspective as a yoga practitioner with vast experience of having attended *one* Pilates class taught by a yoga teacher friend of mine, your description is not at all offensively incorrect. There was lots of emphasis on working the deep postural muscles of the lower abdomen, which seemed like a very sound idea to me.

That doesn't explain why teaching it should be subsidised at public expense, but that's another matter.

(Brian, your comments system is still whingeing to me about the security code)

Also, the reference to "fall" is a bit odd. Is Cornwall so far west that they've started speaking American? Or is this a different Truro we're talking about?

Alan

It's definitely not Truro Cornwall, and is indeed somewhere in America, where small towns do seem to be extraordinarily unlike big cities. See Bill Bryson's The Lost Continent.

"Works on paper" are two-dimensional works of art in pencil, pastel, watercolour, charcoal, print, and so on.

I am the teacher of the Pilates class offered in Truro. This Truro is on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. You can find out more about Pilates by looking at the website of the Pilates Foundation UK which is based in London. I received my training with them when I was living in England. www.pilatesfoundation.com
